The Elder Caregiving That Works

Elder caregiving is more than just taking care of the symptoms of an illness. Elderly patients not only need to deal with their ailment, which is probably long-term, they must also cope with the problems of aging and the isolation that can arise from their situation.

The result is that caregivers not only need to take care of their patient’s physical symptoms, they must also provide:

  • Emotional Support – the ailment is only one of the issues faced by elderly patients. They can also be disoriented by changes in their surroundings, depressed by their situation and anxious about the future.
  • Companionship – Elder caregivers need to be sympathetic listeners and an elder patient’s best friend.
  • Connection – The caregiver is sometimes the only link between a patient and the outside world.

It all means that elder caregiving can be a complicated and difficult task, so much so that caregivers must be prepared to deal with their own physical and emotional stresses.  These can include:

  • Loneliness – Caregivers sometimes spend long hours alone with an unresponsive patient
  • Frustration – As an ailment lingers, frustration can come from not seeing progress in a patient’s condition
  • Helplessness – Elder caregivers can sometimes feel “trapped” by their responsibility

Caregivers must also find a balance between other responsibilities, like their jobs, and caregiving. In addition, conflicts can develop between family members, the caregiver and the patient.

It is easy to see how elder caregiving can be a very stressful task.

It’s also easy to see why more and more families use caregiving services for elder loved ones.  Using a professional caregiver can ease many of the difficulties and stresses of caregiving, but not all services are the same and you need to find one that is right for you and your family.
